A Brief History of Flemings

The first and possibly the most credible name in jeanswear to come out of Merseyside. W H Fleming founded his clothier company in the Scotland road area of Liverpool in the year 1881. Eight years after Levi Strauss won the patent for riveted pants in the USA, W H Fleming had imported the idea and began manufacturing similar work- wear for the seamen of this fair port.

By the turn of the century a crop of branches had opened up in the surrounding area and the Flemings name had become well and truly established. Once youth culture took hold in the fifties the jeans made the transition from work wear to leisure wear, becoming the jeans of choice for the city's Teddy Boys. From the Ted's thru to Mods of the 60's, then skinheads of the 70's and a brief period for the scouse smoothies in 1980.

The label would go into decline during the nineties due to the heavy competition from imported brands. A part of Liverpool's heritage was lost in 1998 when the last remaining Flemings shop on Walton Road closed its doors for the last time.

But that's not the end of the story: 2009 sees the re-birth of this eponymous label. We are a new company trying to recreate the quality of the past. The original idea to re-launch was inspired by Liverpool being designated European Capital of Culture for 2008 and as such the Liver Bird - the symbol of the city - has replaced the original Flemings logo. Our customers will be able to order jeans without the logo in the future if desired. It has taken considerable time to put everything together but now we are in a position to offer you the chance to buy a new line of Flemings jeans, highly regarded and described positively in both style and quality by people who already own a pair. At present our line is traditional, based on the past, offering straight cut and boot cut for women and men. As a small company we only have a limited stock available but we have a facility on our online shop that will automatically let you know when your choice is back in stock.
